*Premiered in Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival 2026 **Broadcast by ERT3 and ERTFLIX REPRESENTATIONS A documentary film by Nikoleta Leousi and Eirini Steirou In Marpissa, Paros, daily life stops as villagers reenact Christ’s Passion during Easter. At the heart of this custom you will find the village women. SHORT SYNOPSIS Marpissa is a village in the Aegean sea that celebrates Easter in its own unique way: On Good Friday, all daily routines stop as eleven scenes from the Passion of Christ are brought to life by villagers portraying figures such as Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Pontius Pilate, etc. It’s not only a religious act, it is the pride of creating a spectacle. SUMMARY What does a bus driver have in common with Pontius Pilatus? What color tunic did Jesus Christ wear- was it burgundy or something else? Are the Representations of Marpissa a religious tradition, a local island custom, or a ritual that brings together different generations of locals and visitors? There is a village in the Aegean sea that celebrates Easter in its own unique way: On Good Friday, the community of Marpissa, on the island of Paros, brings the Passion of Christ to life through the “Representations”. All daily routines come to a halt, as the people of Marpissa carry big crosses, they iron Roman soldier costumes, they debate whether burgundy suits better Christ or Judas and immerse themselves in the intense rhythm of preparing for the most well-known and ancient theatrical representation of the Christian world—the Passion of Christ. Villagers transform themselves into Roman soldiers, apostles, and biblical figures. At its heart are the women of Marpissa, who welcome visitors not only with hospitality but with their unique gaze on a century old iconographic tradition.
